Kurosaki Ichigo first encountered Ishida Uryuu in Volume 4, Chapter 34. Actually, Ishida is in the same class (Class 3) as Ichigo, but Ichigo only noticed that when Inoue, one of their classmates, pointed it out to him. xD
On their first encounter, Ishida already expressed that he, a quincy, hates shinigami, Ichigo included. He challenged Ichigo to a fight, to see who would surpass the other, quincy or shinigami. Ichigo agreed, thinking it was a hand to hand combat, but Ishida released a hollow bait, which would lead the hollows to gather in their town, and their battle will be decided by the number of hollows that they would defeat. Ichigo thought this idea was ridiculous, since many people in the town might be affected, but Ishida would not be swayed, being confident that he could beat every single hollow.
Eventually, it would go out of control, with the number of hollows getting too high and a gigantic hollow appearing. We then learn the story behind Ishida's hate for shinigami. At that time, the quincy, differing from views with the shinigami about the hollows, were being wiped out by the shinigami. But his sensei had always appealed to the shinigami about the necessity of the quincy, that they should instead be working together against the hollows. But then the shinigami forbade him to interfere with their work. One day, his sensei was attacked by 5 hollows, and the shinigami were late in handling it. Thus, his sensei died, right before Ishida's eyes. Ishida then vowed that he would show the shinigami the true strength of the quincy.
But Ichigo made him realize that what his sensei truly wished for was not the shinigami acknowledging the strength of the quincy, but instead, working along with them. Ichigo then decided that the only way they could defeat them all was to fight back to back, and although quite reluctant, Ishida agreed. They then vowed to survive after that battle so they could then beat the crap out of each other afterwards.^^
